David Montgomery, RB, Iowa State #32

5101, 219, 4.63

Notes: Grew up in a rough neighborhood under challenging circumstances in Cincinnati, Ohio. He never met his biological father, and is one of six children. Was a highly productive dual-threat quarterback in high school. As a senior he rushed for 2,707 yards and scored 48 touchdowns. Was an Eagle Scout. His brother was convicted of murder in 2015 and is serving 15 years-to-life sentence. David stays in regular communication with him. Upon arriving on campus at Iowa State, he asked the coaching staff for extra work he could do in order to play early on. The staff recalls him at the facility late on Friday nights in January working out by himself, which led to teammates joining him. Played in all 12 games and started 4 as a true freshman, leading the team in rushing with 563 yards on 109 carries (5.2 avg.) and 2 touchdowns in 2016. Also caught 13 passes for 129 yards. Started all 13 games, rushed 258-1,146-11 (4.4 avg.) and caught 36-296 in 2017. In 12 games he rushed 257-1,216-13 (4.7 avg.) and caught 22-157 in 2018. His college productivity did not come running behind an elite offensive line.

Positives: Very well-built and strong. Adequate play speed. Very good quickness, burst and acceleration. Quick feet and excellent vision, instincts, patience and change of direction. Terrific jump cutter. Makes people miss in the open field. Superior balance, body control and determination. Very physical runner. Runs low and shows tremendous leg drive. Rarely tackled by just one defender and consistently gains additional yardage after contact. Natural pass receiver with very good hands. Runs precise routes and has a firm understanding of the passing game. Adjusts to the ball well. Capable and willing blocker. Volunteers in the community and a high character person.

Negatives: Lacks top-end speed and is not a breakaway runner. Needs some improvement with anchor, positioning and technique as a pass blocker on blitz pickups.

Summary: Isn’t a true home run threat, but an outstanding every-down back who can make an impact immediately. Reminds me a bit of a young Frank Gore.
